Marlins ESPN FIRST TAKE | [BREAKING NEWS] Orioles- Marlins, Yankees-Phillies postponed because of corona
Be there right, like we’re, not ruining something with great levels of pageantry or anything else, that’s, not the issue. The issue is, if they don’t have a plan for handling something like this, how are they going to do it? The next time they have a team that winds up in a similar situation, because that seems to be so likely that they could get there. So after all this time and knowing what the stakes were, the most basic thing you had to ask yourself is: what do we do if we get an outbreak and apparently major league baseball’s thought on that, was mm, hmm and that’s? What worries me? Hey molly, you know what’s interesting today that bomani that that, if, if the philly’s locker room was magic city, bomani would be like. First of all, you have to understand the locker room. The shower is over on the right. So if, as long as the yankees stay, i mean like you got the blueprints, you tell me, 14 people had it at magic city. I would say the exact same thing. Thank you. Yes, real quick. We got ta, let it go. Yeah yeah go ahead. Go ahead! Go ahead. Well, i just wanted to get eduardo perez here, because he’s got a busy day ahead and i want to get his perspective also as a former player eduardo.
Thank you for being with us on short notice. I asked the guys before you joined us how bad it is for baseball.
I want to get your thoughts on that and also as a former player. How would you feel continuing on with the season? Well, um i’ll tell you this i’d be very nervous as a baseball player and again um by the way: it’s 11 players and two coaches that has been confirmed that i’ve tested positive. It doesn’t matter if it’s, one extra one less it’s, still um a third of the team and that’s scary it’s scary, because i imagine they’re going to look at the at uh the the flights and and see where the players were sitting and most likely, that’s uh. Where they were probably uh, giving it and contaminating it to each other, if i’m a player and i’m a new york yankee, i want to make sure that that clubhouse is completely um cleaned out and then not only done once or twice and then i’d also bring In my wipes and i’d do it again a third time i wouldn’t actually go into the clubhouse. I take my bag with me to the hotel and from the hotel straight to the stands, and i play outside without even having to go in i’d. Get a couple. Philly cheesesteaks and i make sure that i’m healthy that’s what i would do personally, this is serious. This is serious for a lot of players and this is going to hold a lot of repercussions, moving forward to see who plays and who does not, who opts out and who doesn’t because of the reality we’re seeing eduardo rodriguez with the boston red sox right now.
Having some complications with his heart and most likely it’s due to the coven, we don’t, know we’re dealing with the unknown here. We’Ve known this, the entire time everything that’s happened so far within the field. The protocol in the stadium has been good, except the celebrations where i see a lot of celebrations where players have been too close to each other i’m wondering where the social distancing is there. But everything outside the field is what i’m concerned with what are the players doing? Where are they going? Are they staying inside? Are they not? I know right now for a fact there are some. There are several teams that are on the road where the organizations have told them. You guys, are staying inside your rooms until we have to leave to the stadium you’re, not going anywhere they’re trying to make sure that the protocol is now taken to another level. Um molly, can i i’d like to say something about about the season so far it was so good. Go ahead have baseball back i’m, a big yankees fan and just watching over the weekend in the first three games, it’s, so good to have baseball back and as a fan, i’m upset right now, one of the few times at the players at the players union, as Opposed to the owners and the commissioner, usually when there’s a conflict, a labor conflict or issues i’m it’s, almost inevitably i’m with the players, because usually they’re in the right.
But in this case, like the short sightedness to think they’re, going to finish this season without a bubble, it takes sacrifice if you want to get back to as normal as possible. If you even want to get 60 games in the odds that you can finish, 60 games with that many people in close proximity to each other without a bubble or several bubbles, or virtually none, virtually zero, and – and here we are this early already – and what? What really stinks about this? Is it wasn’t it like? Maybe maybe, inevitably it would fail anyway, but it’s not impossible. It seems to me to make your best effort. At least i did. I think the players union in this case got in the way of a best effort attempt to to try to get this season played. I know we’re very early. I know it’s just the cancellation of a couple games right now, but it looks bad to me well max. I understand your argument about the idea that you have to sacrifice, but one thing that’s worth noting is the sacrifices that we’re talking about from the players are going into the bubble: it’s, not just them that are sacrificing there’s a lot to do with the people who Are around them? That then also have to sacrifice. I mean i imagine there’s some baseball players that would love nothing more to be in that bubble and be away from home right, but the people that are losing in this by being in the bubble, aren’t just the players so it’s sacrificing – has a lot to do With the people who are around them, that then also have to sacrifice.
I mean i imagine there’s some baseball players that would love nothing more to be in that bubble and be away from home right, but the people that are losing in this by being in the bubble – aren’t just the players so it’s hard for me to say that They were being selfish by refusing it, because i imagine for a lot of them. Refusing to bubble is also trying to be closer to loved ones being closer to children, and things like that now, of course, the loved one and the children are often those that could create the possibility of an infection. I get that part, but i don’t think it’s. Fair to look at the players – and just say you have to sacrifice because asking them to sacrifice – is asking for a level of sacrifice from other people that are not the players. I’M, not i’d, i’m gon na you know back to you. I just want to respond to to you bomani quickly. If i said selfish, i don’t think i did, but if i did that’s not exactly what i mean um and i don’t think i used the word selfish. What i mean is that there’s needs to be a level of seriousness about what the sacrifice that it’s going to take. If you want to get paid at all, if you want to play these games at all and, of course that goes to their loved ones, their families, everything i wouldn’t want to leave my family for months on end right, but if you want to get paid, if You’Re serious about finishing at least a 60 game season, crowning a champion then thinking you’re gon na.
Do that without that kind of sacrifice to me is short sighted that’s really my point. I bet they could have got that bubble if the owners would have paid a little more money like there’s trades owners. Didn’T make it you might not be lying there Music. You know what guys, at the end of the day, it’s really easy to to put blame. Uh to set blame if it’s on the players or, if it’s on major league baseball, whoever whomever it is the reality is what are they going to do now, and i think that that is what that’s that’s what’s going on. You have 30 teams. They try to divide it and and put 10, maybe in a bubble in the west 10 in the central 10 in the east. But where are you going to do it and where are you gon na? Have the facilities to be able to do this? This isn’t, a basketball court uh this isn’t a soccer field. This is this is baseball. Where were where you have to make sure that it’s played every day, it’s, not every other day or every three or every three days you play baseball every day and i think logistically. I think this is what major league baseball was trying to do the best, as they can just like they’re trying to find, and they found a home for the toronto blue jays in buffalo. What do you think rob manfred’s responsibility? Is here? Rob manfred’s, refund responsibility, he’s.
Just trying to make sure that he is the liaison, if it’s, between the owners and and the players association right now, he’s going to have to set up, probably look and see what the situation is. It’S, easy to point the fingers and say: oh it’s in miami. Listen guys, i live in miami okay and we, at least in my area i look around everybody. Has their masks on. Everybody is following the protocol of what the mayor wants us to do here. That’S one thing i can say at least where i live has have the numbers gone up: they have in the state of florida, that’s, not a lie. The dade county it’s gone up, we’re trying to do our best here. At least we are here responsibly. That being said, the marlins went to atlanta first and before they left miami they all they tested negative. Then alfaro test positive before opening day, then you get three more testing positive um after in the third game of the series and then all of a sudden. Now you get 11 more players, two coaches added to it. We don’t know if the players ended up getting it if it’s in atlanta, if they brought it from miami, if they got in atlanta, if they got it on the plane on the way to philadelphia or in philadelphia. All we know is that reality is set in the yankees, have postponed their game against the phillies this evening and um and we’re going to have to take a check and look back, and the commissioner is going to have to do the same thing and realize that This is our new normal.
How can we make sure that the players, once they have those walk offs and the wins they don’t celebrate the way that we saw in tampa bay yesterday or that we’ve seen if it’s in oakland on their walk off? We have to make sure that the players stay even keeled throughout the entire season and maintain social distancing eduardo to bomani’s point um. You know we had. We had dana white on this show several times since the outbreak of this pandemic, and his point was because he successfully staged events, and i asked him. What can other leagues learn from what you’ve done and then top ranked boxing here on? Espn also successfully staged events, and he said it can be done, but it’s very expensive. It costs money and for the second time today, i’ll say scared. Money don’t make money right. Some of the sacrifice that had to be made is not only isolation from players. Families in a bubble or multiple bubbles, it sound, would be more realistic for major league baseball. However many it takes eight ten of them, but some of the sacrifices are the money like teams, maybe well we’ll, lose a little bit of money this year. Instead of a lot of money or we’ll lose a lot instead of tons of money, um bomani points out, hey, maybe it’s expensive and the owners didn’t want to what’s your sense of why they’re not in bubbles other than logistically, because it can be done, but it Costs money what’s, your sense of why like, where was the expense thought to be too great by the owners or the players or both? I think i think both, i think both i think.
At the end of the day, you know the money is being paid by the owners and they’re looking at what are we going to make uh? You know without the fans in the stands, you you look at the repercussions economically of the owners. You look at the amount of players that it takes to field a major league team. You got 30 players in the active roster. You have another 30 at the alternate sites. I mean basketball. Doesn’T have that soccer does not have that top rank does not have that. So major league baseball, it takes a lot more and then, when some of those guys get hurt, you have to bring in players from alternate sites. What is it to tell you that that play that that area or that bubble so called is, is hell is? Is it an okay situation? I think it’s, two different it’s apple and oranges. When you deal with with the sports and major league baseball is trying to do the best they can again owners and players, knowing that they’re 60 60. and right now, we’re wondering how many, if even the marlins can feel an alternate site camp because so far i Think they’re going to be left with what eight or nine players in their alternate sites, plus a couple coaches that won’t be there either it’s going to be interesting to see what happens moving forward. All i do know is that the marlins will be tested.
They tested their players again today and by 11 o’clock p.m. They will be getting those results tonight to see exactly if it has spread out to even more players or staff members. The bottom line is we’re only here, because the money is so significant that they are trying to get. Every idea that we got is a bad one like. If you took the money away and said hey, you guys want to play baseball there wouldn’t, be anybody playing baseball like we have to understand that walking in here that no matter what happens, it could be very easiest for us to find a blame. The blame is the way that we live. The blame is the need to pay all these bills, because, no matter what the sport is and all the precautions, this is something that is entirely possible and all parties involved have decided that the risk was necessary because the stakes were so high. Listen. This is as sean doolittle, the the reliever for the mar for the sorry for the nationals said um what about a month ago that sports is i’m paraphrasing now because about a month ago, like the reward that for a healthy society, we this this pandemic has been So, disastrously handled by certain leaders in our country that that there’s a there’s, a very good argument to be made that sports should not be played right now. I think there is value in the distraction they provide and if they can be played responsibly, they should be.
It may be eduardo as you point out that the nature of baseball the number of people involved etc, means that it’s just not possible to finish a season under these conditions, different for the nba, with far fewer players and very progressed into their season. By the time. The pandemic hit right and we’re we’re all making adjustments we’re, making adjustments right now. I’M doing this i’m doing this from my home, i’ve been broadcasting kbo gangs for 12 weeks from my home, the privilege of also broadcasting major league games last week, and i will tonight again, but i will tell you this. This is something that major league baseball is going to have to look and the players are going to have to decide what is the safest route for them and right now, the the need of taking showers in the ballpark, the need of being in a clubhouse or Having a clubhouse on the road, i think, is an unnecessary need. I think those players should be doing and dressing up at the hotel, uh, limiting the amount of players per buses and then go to the ballpark play sit in the stands and then do your thing in the dugout and only have the players that are playing the Ones that are the nine active in that dugout with the coaches that’s it everybody else, spread out we’re living in a different world guys and we have to adjust to that different world. All around no question that that’s a great safety a protocol, they could implement real, quick eduardo because i’m being told we have to wrap it.
I want to get your thoughts on this just as a former player. What would it take for you to say i’m out i’m, not playing the season? I don’t feel comfortable. My wife’s telling me that’s it you’re done that’s all it takes for me. I mean and that’s all it took for me now as a single player, you have decisions to make with bills to be bills to be paid and time to be accrued as far as service time, but my wife, she runs the show here, so she tells me You’Re done i’m done fair enough. Women always know best, happy wife eduardo. I love it eduardo. Thank you! So, much for being with us all right, we’ll talk to you soon take care.
