Legendary television host regis philbin has died at the age of 88. philbin’s career spanned more than 60 years. One of his most notable roles began back in 1988, as the host of the beloved american morning show live where he hosted alongside kathy griff gifford and then later on, with kelly ripa film passed away last night, just one month, shy of his 89th birthday he’ll be Remembered by his wife of 50 years, joy, philbin and his daughters, jj joanna and amy russ sweetland joins me now, he’s, a senior la reporter for hollywoodlife.com russ, appreciate you giving us your time today. Thank you very much yeah we are seeing so many tributes are pouring in now for regis philbin talk to me about his legacy. What a legacy i mean there’s, only a few legends left. If you really think about it and regis philbin was quite the legend in television, he was a singer, he was an actor. He was just an all around genuinely great guy that uh we will love forever yeah, and he just i mean what was interesting as well. About him was the amount of energy he brought to every show that he was on uh. He was direct, he was forthright and i think, that’s one reason why people loved him so much because he really told you like it is absolutely. He was so real whether it would be a big, a list actor or a professional wrestler.
He would be all in and he would always be funny and tell it like it is, and he would always make sure that you knew where he was where he was standing.
You know there was never a time where you didn’t see the real regis philbin, no you’re certain man, but behind all of that we do know that he did uh. He did suffer from a number of health uh ailments as well having gone through a number of surgeries yeah after the past uh few years, almost the decade, almost even he’s he’s had heart problems and it’s alleged that he had a heart attack, but that’s not been Um uh proven to be the case at its natural causes at this time, um, where he, where he died at home in connecticut, but it’s, just a sad story, because regis philbin is just one of the greatest legends uh of all time, and he had you know A long relationship with kathy gifford, of course, where he hosted uh, live with uh hosted that show for a number of years with her and then later on, with uh, with kelly ripa she’s, putting this out on twitter right now. We are beyond saddened to learn about the loss of regis fullman. He was the ultimate class act, bringing his laughter and joy into our homes. Every day on live for more than 23 years. We are beyond lucky to have him as a mentor in our careers and aspire every day to fill his shoes on the show.
We send our deepest love and condolences to his family and hope they can find some comfort in knowing he left the world.
A better place developed a very close relationship with her as well. He did he made her. He made her career, i mean um she’s made her career since then, obviously, but he gave her a chance to fill that role, that uh kathie lee left and uh. She she took it and with them together, their their dynamic was so special um, and you could see that we just loved her and she loved him and just made a made an appointment, television to see them both on screen certainly was before i let you go. We do always have to talk about those great one liners those quick quips that he had really brought something different to television. Absolutely saturday night, live’s, daryl, hammond uh would imitate him often with his uh quick remarks and his like almost boom and just like. He would get at you like instantly to garning your attention and he would always be there for for the jokes for for the fun times and making you feel comfortable, because so many celebrities, and so many uh sports figures and everybody that talked to him and when He was on millionaire with uh regular people too. The philbin family issued a statement saying that they’re deeply saddened and quote his family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him for his warmth, his legendary sense of humor and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking About we thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60 year career and ask for privacy as we mourn his loss. Tv talk, show host jimmy kimmel says: regis was a great broadcaster, a good friend and a tremendous amount of fun. He leaves behind a beautiful family and a tv legacy that will likely go unmatched regis. I hope our friend rickles met you at the pearly gates with open arms and a slew of insults.
