In their first pro matches. Back after the shutdownTop seeds, Karolina Pliskova and Sonya Kenin are out of the 2020 Western and Southern Open. Pliskova fell to world number 41 Veronika Kudermetova and the 23 year old. Russian really rose to the occasion. Kudermetova matched Pliskovas power and then some often hitting full. On return, winners off the Czechs’ serves. Many times she rushed Karolina hitting hard and up the middle., While Veronika played a great match. Karolina honestly could have won it, but she simply refused to change. Rennae Stubbs. A commentator in this match brought up the excellent point in that Veronika really liked those low balls which Karolina kept giving her but struggled with ones that were higher had more spin and out of her strike. Zone. Karolina has more of a one dimensional game, so she didnt adjust properly and make her opponent. Uncomfortable. Her serve was also a liability because, while she hit 11 aces, she hit 9 double faults and her first serve percentage was lower than normal.. Her inconsistent ball toss is one culprit, because it actually helped Kudermetova because it made Karolinas serve easy to read.. I dont think this match was terrible from Pliskova, but once again she needs to be more aware of what her opponent is doing and introduce more variety to her. Game. Pliskovas defeat opens up the draw for a lot of players as Elise Mertens, Amanda, Anisimova and Jessica Pegula exceeded my expectations. Winning their first matches in great fashion.

. Kenins loss was a lot more complicated because for a good three fourths of the match she wasnt herself at all., She made a plethora of unforced errors and Cornet being the steadier player, took full advantage of this going up. 6. 1. 5. 2. 40. 15.. At this point, I was already preparing this video, but Sonya stopped me for another 30 minutes staging an amazing mini comeback, wining three games in a row., While some of this is due to Cornet unraveling Sonya just stepped up her game, taking advantage of her opponents drop In depth. Now here I was changing the videos title to Kenin stages, crazy comeback, but then she faltered, once again. Cornet, went up 4 1 in the tiebreaker, but Sonya fought back to win five points in a row to hold 2 set points.. The first was lost due to error from, but the second was a total crusher as she sent a put away, forehand long. She later saved some more match points, but Cornet, finally, close the door to seal the upset with the score 6. 1. 7. 6.. At first. I was worried for Kenin because her form was awful. However, she showed flashes of the grand slam greatness towards the tail end of the set which is promising.. I think much of this loss can be attributed to not playing for so long, which is why I feel a lot of these players who didnt play a tournament prior to this will struggle.

. This is an advantage lower, ranked players like Cornet have, as she had a match under her belt, with the win over Caty McNally.. Another thing i want to mention is crowd or lack of one as Andy. Roddick brought up a great point in that this result. Couldve ended differently. If there was a crowd., I agree and think Kenin wouldve really feed off that crowd energy and upped her game earlier.. This is something to look at in the upcoming weeks. With Kenins loss. Her quarter is wide open as Keys Cornet, Azarenka and Garcia are going to want to take advantage of having one loss seeded player to deal with. First talking about Azarenka. She really impressed me in her 6 2. 6 3, thrashing of Donna Vekic.. Another thing that made me take notice was her calling out of some messy players. Vika will next face: Caroline Garcia, who took out Sloane Stephens, 6, 3, 7, 6. Sloane. Definitely shouldve at least won a set in this match, as she first got out to a 3 1 lead before Garcia wheeled off 5 consecutive games. To take the first set. Sloane hit another stride and served for the second at 5 3, but she was ultimately broken to love. With the loss. Sloane is now 1 7 on the season. Her only victory coming against Emma Navvaro, who was ranked 497th at the time.. While this performance today was a bit more promising Im seriously, considering making a separate video about her drop in play, if she doesnt get it together at the US Open.

, Another woman with a poor record this season so far is Venus Williams, as she is now 1. 5, after falling to 16th seeded Dayana Yastremska. Venus situation, though, is far different from Sloanes as shes been playing really well, since the resumption of the tour. Williams had suffered a heartbreaking 7 5 loss in the third set, but actually couldve and shouldve won this in straights. As she was up, 7 6, 1, 0, 40, 0 on Dayanas serve.. When she was unable to break here, Dayana regained hope.. I think Venus isnt really used to winning right now at this level, which is why she was hesitant in that game. But that, aside, her serve let her down towards the end of the final set., Although she was unable to advance Im still happy with Venus performance and believe she will be a dangerous floater in the open. Speaking of dangerous floaters. All of my darkhorses for this tournament lost in the very opening round, as Rybakina fell to Alexandrova and Fernandez lost to Jabeur. Im, not regretful or made at my decision to have them go deep here, because they all played well and were so close to victory.. Even Coco Gauff, who I believed, would face Serena in the third round, played decent, but I underestimated the improvements of her opponent, Maria Sakkari, as the Greek woman will make lives very difficult for many players in New York. Sonya, though, was my predicted winner and I had Pliskova reaching the semifinals, so I definitely need to do another mini preview, which will probably come in the next day or so.

. Moving over to the mens things went a lot more to the script, as literally all of the seeded players in action won their matches.. I was pleasantly surprised with Dan Evans, Milos, Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov, as they picked up some very impressive wins over Rublev Querrey and Humbert respectively. Young Canadians, Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger Aliassime, were also impressive in their comprehensive wins over Cilic and Basilashvili.. I believe Aliassime could cause a lot of problems for Djokovic if they meet in the third round and Felix could be at an advantage for Novak recently withdrew from doubles here, citing a neck injury. Thats. All for this update video and let me know how you feel about the Western and Southern Open results.
